Since the mid-nineteenth century, the name Snooker has been known to aficionados of farces and comedies alike. Initially, Snooker was a popular comic performer in theatre and variety shows, accompanied by Hooker. He was alternatively paired with other performers or performed alone, yet remained one of the most popular and celebrated comic characters of the time, into the early 20th century.
