At the clubs has been “snooker”
The New York herald, 11 April 1891
A game that has been greatly in vogue this winter, says Piccadilly, at the clubs has been “snooker,” a variety of pool, or rather a combination of pyramids with pool, which has been found very fascinating. It is distinctly a gambling game too; even with pennies on, a few hours’ play may prove i fairly expensive. This is accounted for by the pool balls having different values, as well as by the extremely numerous chances which, almost more than in any other game, exist against the “striker.”
