The Murchison Score
The Murchison Times and Day Dawn Gazette (Cue), Saturday 23 September 1899
A match was played 'twixt Dawn and Cue
Which showed some wondrous scoring,
And tearful trowlers, not a few
Are non-sucsess deploring.
The first wan in made seventy-six,
A pretty score to top with,
But bowlers rarely get for nix
Our wary F. A. Sopwith.
His comrade, too, made twenty-five,
And made 'em like a nailer,
No tail is shown in teams that strive
To play like David Taylor.
A tidy score of fifty-four
Was hit by crafty Chryslal,
He drives as straight as bullets pour
From Boisdeverry's pistol.
To "Chrys" we bow and dolf our hats,
Though Chrystal ain't a lady,
Our Chryslal wears, when Chryslal bats,
That bandit-big and shady.
Though Master Bird made only nine
He tried to bear his burden,
Perhaps anon he'll better shine—
The century's his guerdon.
Then fifty-six the bowling marred,
And now we ask no pardon,
Let's cheer the man, our good old pard,
Who's known as "Mighty" Mardon.
He plays the game from first to last
(Though poor, perhaps at Snooker,)
All hail good friend who scores so fast—
And works for Crooks and Brooker
Then Boss, not out for seventy-one,
Showed smart and sterling cricket
Aud Goss got thirty-six like fun
And didn't lose his wicket.
Yes, Boss and Goss.
Like Box and Cox,
Or Romulus and Remus,
Or Hux and Bux will give their knock,
And from defeat rederm us
The extras, seven, reflect no shame
On sturdy stumper Hickson.
He's safe, not showy, all the same
You sliould'nt try your trioks on.
The trundlers were the lights that failed,
Though hipped by faulty fielding.
They cursed the stumps so neatly bailed,
And cursed the willow wielding.
Young Patrick's one for fifty-four
Is poor for pelter Patrick.
He didn't rouse applausive roar
And didn't do the hat trick.
While Oldham's two for for seventy-eight,
Though best among suiue bad ‘uns,
Will hardly win him honor great
Or wealth like Esar Haddon'n.
Big Beck with one for eighty-six
Has figures far from aplendid,
He didn't even hit the sticks
When "Bandit's" innings ended.
