The Irrepressible One
The Western Champion and General Advertiser for the Central-Western Districts (Barcaldine), Sunday 24 May 1903
Mr. Magoffin is complaining that his words of wisdom in the Council are unreported, while other orators have due prominence given to their speeches. The News hints that if Mr. M. desires to see all his speeches in print, he might reserve a page or two of that publication for the purpose, paying advertising rates for the same. A poet, who once before embalmed some of the Magoffian wisdom in immortal verse, now sends us the following:—
Melrose Jimmy, have you heard it said
"Fools rush in where angels fear to tread?"
Seems to me you'd better do a get—
All the blooming crowd has got you set.
Can't appreciate your common sense;
Pity they should be so beastly dense.
There you are, prepared to teach them all—
Boardsmen, Editors, both great and small,
"Holy George" and "Snooker," and the Shire
Council, ought of listening never tire.
Yet they do not profit by your skill
But go muddling on their own way still.
Any Council should be justly proud
To have a member voice his views so loud.
But you know how jealous people feel,
And your talents you had best conceal.
Chermside said it, and of course he knows—
For intellect refer me to Melrose.
Chuck it, Jimmy, you have done your best,
Chuck it, lad, and take a well-earned rest.
