“I showed your little tale to Snooker—you know Snooker of the Boy’s Own Thriller? An ingenious man, Snooker. He read it. Decidedly promising, Snooker thought, but it would be well in future to be a little more realistic, and to throw in another murder or two. But decidedly promising. And Snooker—good fellow, Snooker—sent this little sum,” here Willoughby handed Will some money carefully sealed in an envelope, “by way of honorarium. Glad to have been of service, my young friend.”
When Will opened the sealed envelope an hour later, he found six shillings and sixpence—the sixpence in coppers. And he did not think any the worse of Snooker or of Willoughby Mainwaring because the sum was so small.
