Frederick Charles Keyser

It is currently unknown whether Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick Charles Keyser (1841–1920) played snooker. However, it is likely that he did, as he was directly related to the distribution of this game. In addition to an excellent military career, Frederick Charles Keyser became famous for his artistic talent and magnificent voice. In the 1870s, he played the role of Snooker in a series of comic sketches. In 1882, he assumed command of the Signalling Party during the Egyptian Campaign and, in 1889, The Field published the rules of the game of Four Jolly Snookers, which had been introduced in the Cercle Mohamed Aly, Alexandria, Egypt.

In 1885, in Ootacamund, he collaborated with Captain Chamberlain to organise a concert. Unfortunately, Frau Snooker was unable to participate. However, a month later, he presented his show, “Waxwork Exhibition,” in the image of the same Snooker. These events appear to be mere coincidences. However, further investigation may be required to ascertain if there is, in fact, a causal relationship.
