From 1900 to 1909

The decade that saw the emergence of a new sport. In 1900, the Billiard Association of Great Britain (BA) recognised snooker and issued its own set of rules. France followed suit in 1902. A few years later, tournaments under the auspices of BA received official status, although they were held after English billiards matches as public entertainment. In 1908, the first authentic snooker match in history was held between two professionals, comprising 101 frames. Legendary John Roberts Junior and Tom Reece, an up-and-coming billiards star, held the public spellbound for two weeks with their intense duel on the green baize. The era of snooker had begun.
