The era preceding the inception of snooker. Billiards has reached a point of maturity. Competitive events occur across a spectrum, with international championships in English billiards. A clear dichotomy exists between commercial and sporting avenues. Pyramids, Black Pool, and Life Pool are prevalent in public houses and officer casinos. All the elements necessary for the advent of an intellectual game on the green baize are in place. However, the final catalyst remains elusive.
