The 17th century saw the emergence of billiards as a popular pastime in almost all European countries. In royal courts, accomplished players enjoyed significant success. The game’s evolution is evidenced by its mentions in books and the accounts provided by travelers who visited exotic locales and recounted their experience of playing billiards. While it retained its original form, it was no longer simply “billiards.” It had evolved into several distinct variants, each with its own set of rules and established traditions. The game continued to evolve rapidly in the following centuries.
