We should have been snookered all right

A Night Experience.
We crawled out three times altogether that night, and I had sooner take my chance in any shell fire than do that job again. We were always running into German patrols, or imagined that we were. Once when we were ten yards off the stream we heard a German working towards us on the other side. The other fellow wanted to fire, but I stopped him, for if we had tired the Germans might have sent up a light and then we should have been snookered all right. So would the German patrols have been, but that, would not have been much good to us.
