HEARTS ARE TRUMPS.
The Story of a Whist Drive.
By John James.
<…>
“Dear friends,” he announced, “the lady’s prize is won with the capital score of 146 by the charming daughter of our hostess, Miss Phoebe. She is followed hard by Miss—er— Arabella Snooker, with 143. The—er—fight for the gentleman’s prize has resulted somewhat remarkably. Mr. Gerald Brookes scores 149—a figure which has also been compiled by Mr. James Jones. Under these—er—circumstances, the usual course is for the tying parties to play a deciding hand with the two top-scoring ladies.”
