Oh, those clubs! Where will their influence end? An anxious mother waited upon Mr. Dickinson at the Thames Police Court, and asked what she was to do with her boy. “What has he done?” inquired the magistrate. “Why, sir, he’s been and joined a club.” It was not alleged that the youngster was in danger of developing into a toper, or that he squandered his substance at “snooker pool” or the card table, or that he speculated over the tape, or smoked too many cigarettes, or stayed out late at night, or committed any of the other enormities sometimes associated in the maternal mind with club life. No; he did none of these things, for he was a good boy until he was misled by companions into joining this institution.
