He thought he could pay Mr. Blackwell when he paid his Adelaide creditors. He still owed then £40, and was paying at the rate of £2 10s a month. His rent was 10s a week. He occasionally played billiards; sometimes not one game a month. He never bet on the games—Yes, he did once, about twelve months ago, when he played a gentleman a game. Never lost as much as £1 in one night. Was not particulary fond of a game called “Snook ’em.” He played it three nights. He played nap when he was away from home. He played a game of penny nap since he was in the Mount, and lost 1s 9d. By Mr. Davison—Came from Mount Barker to Narracoorte. The cost of living in Narracoorte was high. He had to send his wife to the North for her health and that involved considerable expense.
