Inaugural Kooyong v. Royal South Yarra Tennis Club Lightening Risk Snooker Match
By Alistair Macindoe
In early October the Kooyong team won this match 9 frames to 7 to cap off a very pleasant night of snooker, dining and socialising at Royal South Yarra.
The rules of Lightening Risk Snooker were new to all but one of the Kooyong players (who have roughly 250 years of experience playing ordinary snooker between them).
In this game, the player can in essence pot whichever ball he likes, but with the restrictions of potting the same colour not more than three times in a row and only one red in a row.
As well, the yellow is worth a generous 8 points. Safety play is not prominent in this game. Although there are penalties for missing colours, the Kooyong players took an instant liking to the game, and ran in three forty-plus breaks and a 53.
The Kooyong team was Fraser Murrell (capt.), Harry Andrews, David Pitt, Simon Fortune, Dick Grogan, Ed Bryant, Damian Mescher, and myself.
Admin’s note: Risk Snooker is an Australian variant of Savile Snooker, which in turn developed from Volunteer Snooker.
