JOHN ROBERTS LEARNING SNOOKER.
It has long been a recognised fact that the least likely man to know anything about the rules of billiards and kindred games is the high-class professional player. A case in point occurred the other day, when the one and only John Roberts, the Admirable Crichton of billiards, was playing Mack. He frequently asked questions of the marker that would have made the veriest tyro smile, but the culminating point was reached when, seeing several gaping pockets, he let fly haphazard and pocketed no fewer than seven balls, viz., four reds and the black, green, and yellow. The old champion looked hugely delighted at this masterpiece of a stroke, and turning to the marker said. “How many do I get for that?” “You give seven away, sir,” promptly replied the presiding official, amidst loud laughter. In which Roberts heartily joined.—”Edinburgh Evening News.”
