HONEYMOON IN VEGAS—(1 hr. 36 min.; 1992) In Andrew Bergman’s rambunctious new comedy, hundreds of Elvis impersonators gather in the desert paradise for a convention. The theme of the movie is that Americans are stumbling around among counterfeits, unable to separate the copy from the original. Jack (Nicolas Cage), a goodhearted but rather rattled and fearful young man, afraid of marriage, takes his girl, Betsy (Sarah Jessica Parker), to Las Vegas, intending to tie the knot at last. And then it happens: In the lobby of Bally’s, a New York gangster and gambler named Tommy Korman (James Caan) lays eyes on Betsy and sees an exact resemblance to his dead wife. He has to have her, and soon he snookers Jack into a poker game and gets the poor eager slob so far into debt that Jack, for fear of his Hfe, has to give up Betsy to the gangster for the weekend. The movie becomes a disjointed, frenetic chase comedy that stretches out to lush Kauai, where Tommy has a home, and then roars back into Vegas. James Caan drifts in and out of focus, and Nicolas Cage lets his eyebrows fly up and shouts his way through the role. Bergman seems to be caught between romantic comedy and outright buffoonery.
