Length is a matter of preference. Six feet is about right for most heavy-water snookers, with a short, stout, two-handed butt.

The reel seat and reel locking adjustment should be of quality material and construction. If you go the custom rod route, you can control everything — wrapping, color and number of guides.

Casting is a very personal thing, like a tennis serve or golf putt. So it would be presumptuous of me to tell you how or where to cast. Still, here are a few hints.

Off a beach, cast up and down the shore, not straight out. Snook like to hang out in the slough or drop-off of the beach.
