Directors Snippy, Driddle, and Snooker

“365 Gairbridge Street, Glasgow, Sept. 10, 18—
Ever dearest Johnnie,—After a delay that has almost maddened me, my case comes on to-morrow before Sheriff Fly. Will you be at the Court, my darling, to cheer my sorrowing heart with the sunshine of your presence? O Johnnie! I have been looking for you coming to see me all last week; but you never came. Are your tender feet sore, or what is the cause? I’m all anxiety to know why you have neither come to see me, nor written. I understand that base creature, Jane M’Fyke, has been trying all she can to get my situation. Directors Snippy, Driddle, and Snooker have promised, it seems, to work for her on condition that she comes out clear at the trial to-morrow. But will she? Not if l can help it. The girl Rorrison has quite recovered, which is an infinite relief to my sorely distracted mind. I’m sure I don’t know how I will stand the examination to-morrow. I know I’m in error; and I would give worlds that this had never been. O my beloved! it was your sealskin jacket that caused the whole unfortunate business. If I’m cast in heavy damages, may the Lord provide the means; for I’m afraid it is more than I can; for it is but little I have of my own. Now will you really, really, really promise to be at the Court to-morrow? Do, like a dear, and believe me ever—ever—ever your devoted, suffering
Mary.”
