“Excuse me,” replied the D.O., “I was about to allude to Mr. Bettany’s style of play, not his physiognomy and wardrobe, I really do think his pose is ugly. And so do others. By the way, didn’t ‘John Barleycorn’—whoever he is—tick him, off the other day in the ‘Recorder’? Didn’t he take the rise out of him! I should think he’ll need a long rest before he plays again. He’s fairly snookered. And then to be advised to go to Brazil! Good heavens! I wonder if he has taken the cue, or the tip. He hasn’t been seen since, you know.”
