Snooker Boycott?
Daily Herald, Thursday 26 February 1931
Although entries for the Professional snooker championship, of which Joe Davis is the holder, close on Saturday, not a single name has yet been received.
Davis is in a class by himself when it comes to potting, even the great Lindrum has to take second place when Davis plays snooker. It is, however, unlikely that Davis will defend his title. He is not in favour of the principle of champions having to play in preliminary rounds.
It may be recalled that Willie Smith, when English billiards champion, had a similar prejudice and dropped out of the championship rather than take part in preliminary heats. It would seem that history will repeat itself in the snooker championship this year. However, at the moment it looks as if there will be no contenders for the title, and like the billiards championship, which was boycotted by Davis, Newman, Lindrum and McConachy, it will be shelved for this season.
