The Life and Times of John Roberts

John Roberts was born at Ardwick, a suburb of Manchester, on August 15, 1847. His father, who was champion of England for twenty-one years (1849-70), was a Lancashire man and his mother a Cheshire woman, so that one may say that the Robertses strongly represented the Red Rose counties. His character as a lad was impetuous and quick-tempered, and he was certainly one of the most untidy of boys, besides being full of devilment and frequently in scrapes at home with his equally fiery-tempered father.
