Talking Snooker

Every so often in a sport something happens which puts it in an entirely different light, not so much to its own followers but to the general public. This was the case with snooker in 1978 when the World Professional Championship, sponsored by W D and H O Wills under their Embassy brand name, was seen not only by capaci ty crowds in the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield but, every day for two weeks, by a BBC television audience which grew from four million on the first day to seven million by the end of the tournament.
