Billiards
The precise origin of the game of English billiards is lost, not exactly in the mists of antiquity, but certainly in the mists of our own history. Shakespeare’s attempt to put a cue into the hands of Cleopatra is often quoted, but concerning it the learned Malone says tersely : “ —– ; ‘ let us to billiards.’ This is one of the numerous anachronisms that are found in these plays. This game was not known in ancient times.”
